WXUT Video Update 4-05-12

Welcome to a new addition of the managers desk. WXUT has been moving in forward with a lot of progress. There has been growth in the number of DJs that are part of the radio station. Adobe be audition has been installed on the main computer and the production computer, if you are unsure of how to use it but have used the old version please let me know otherwise there is a help button that takes you to an operating manual. If you would like to record promos get in touch with the production director Tyler his email can be found on the contacts page. Tomorrow we will be purchasing some promotional items so that we have things to give away at events. Also I meet with the person that is in charge of putting music fest together, if anyone has any input or ideas for music fest let me know I will be able to voice any ideas or concerns from previous years. WXUT Is going to do everything we can to be a bigger part of Music Fest this year as last year we were not as involved as we would have liked.

Hello Everyone it is time for another installment of the Station Managers Blog. First let me say what I have been since the last installment, mostly I have been putting all of my efforts into trying to find a new engineer. I have had a few people contact me about it and will soon be interviewing them for the position. Then I contacted the engineering co-op office and I am working with them to get some info about students that are interested. Also later this week I will be upgrading our version of Adobe Audition which is what we use to record shows and anything else that needs recorded. There are two upcoming events in February that WXUT has been reserved for the first is the 23rd from 11Am-2PM, and the other is the 28th from 6PM to 8PM. If anyone is interested in DJ-ing for these events please get back to me and we can set up a time to show you how to use the remote equipment. Even If you can not do those events but think you might be interested in the future please set up a time with me so we can show you how to use the remote equipment.

Welcome to the first edition of Stuff Dudes Like. Stuff Dudes Like is a blog derived from its title. SDL will feature four different categories: Entertainment, Transportation, Brews, and Gear. This is a very special first edition, so grab your reading spectacles (if they are not already on) and get ready to lust over some of the best tools to survive in the zombie apocalypse.

You wake up for the usual 9-5 grind and turn on the TV. Playing on every channel is the Emergency Alert System. Looking out your window you see a platoon of the undead swarming your neighborhood. Thankfully you’ve prepared for a situation just like this.

Stuff Dudes Like

Reaching to your right you find your trusty GORUCK GR2 bag. What’s good about this thing? Well when the creator is an ex-special forces guy named “Jason” you can put your trust in this piece of gear not letting you down. It features 1000D CORDURA, MOLLE compatible grid, a laptop pocket, and a hydration bladder compartment. Don’t take off without it.

Thankfully you’re storing a 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser in your garage. Sure Toyota had some braking issues over the past year but those are a luxury when zombies are in town (hint, hint). The Cruiser will be your moving house till the cure is found. Featuring over 81 cubic feet of storage with the rear seats down, that’s home. Of course there is plenty of space up front to strap on a push (zombie) bar, flood lights, and armor.

You have an array of weapons stored in the back of your Land Cruiser but most of those feature almost non-renewable resources. Ammunition. A machete can be your best friend in the toughest of times. I’ll leave those details up to your imagination. Nothing says surviving the zombie apocalypse like a machete that can be found at your local Wal-Mart (if it isn’t swarming with the living dead already).

Sure you may not want to know what time it is when there is no one left but you, but when you have the Kobold Soarway GMT on your wrist you can’t do anything but look down. Worn by special forces and Secret Service agents alike the GMT is assembled in what used to be Pennsylvania and is powered by a Swiss automatic-winding movement so batteries will never be needed.

Once normal grocery store food goes bad you’ll have to rely on your MREs or Meals Ready to Eat. MREs feature a shelf-life of five years, so no rush. Each MRE features an entree, snack, dessert, drink mix, and condiment pack. If you’re lucky enough to rip open a meal requiring heat the MRE packs a self-heating system to bring your meal to the optimum temperature.

One of those bastards got you. You reach into your GR2 and find your Combat Gauze right where you left it. Packing your wound the bleeding stops almost instantly. As you drift into a sleep you feel bright lights splashing down onto you. The US military has come to your aide with an injection of the zombie DNA killing serum.

What have I been up to? What a kind question. In the past few weeks of lackluster blogging on the site (myUT bloggers ball is in your court) we’re hopefully back in action. In the past few weeks I’ve been settling into External Affair’s University Communications office, doing many different online content tasks and seeing UT behind-the-scenes action. I hope to secure a position here after awhile or with The University of Oregon (one can modestly dream big) in their office of Marketing & Brand Management.

What’s up next on my schedule? Well this week TEAM WXUT including myself will be participating in Relay for Life 2010 in the Rec Center from Friday to Saturday. Then on Saturday evening I will be DJing some-sort of dance sponsored by RSA.

It is quite to meet you, if we haven’t met my name is Cam Norton, I’m your friendly neighborhood Internetvangelist. One week ago I wrote the Campbell’s Heart-Warming Blog of the Week (sponsorship not confirmed). In one week or four days in intern terms I’ve spent my days in University Communications learning everything I need to know about the university TV system and social media from Chris and Amanda.

Not to toot the university’s horn but when was the last time your school was on CNN? The answer is Wednesday. That’s right CNN’s own Don Lemon stopped by UT for his nomadic-series where he wanders around the country featuring people’s thoughts and feelings on the current “times.” Thankfully Don happens to have a CNN satellite truck following him to broadcast this to the cable news viewing audience. Don and I exchanged an elbow bump and I even managed to spare him a WXUT-shirt and wrist and now I’ve been informed ankle band. Sarcasm aside the visit was great for the university and featured three different live shots totaling over 12 minutes of coverage (3 years in TV time). I helped assemble UT students for an 8 minute live shot featuring a discussion about what college students are concerned about now and in the future. We’ve all learned that everyone is tired of political attack ads. What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve had a great time learning and absorbing the ways of the University Communications office.

Now a brief message for WXUT self-promotion. Thursday November 4th at 7:15PM in Student Union room 3018 we will be holding a new member meeting. This meeting is for all new and existing members and will serve as the meet and greet for WXUT Management and DJ’s. So come one come all to our meeting!

Well…slightly that is. Starting Monday I will be part of UT’s Marketing and Communications Office. For a few months I’ve been pondering what it would be like to work there. About a week ago I was approached with the opportunity to be part of the office, taking notice of my work for the station. I was ecstatic to say the least about getting my foot in the door and gaining experience with the University’s MARCOM Office.

Now–about turing the page, for five years and five days to be exact I’ve been an employee of a local coffee shop and eatery. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the funniest, smartest, nicest, and most caring people I have ever met. We “function” as a dysfunctional family. Although I’ll be spending the weekends with them it still feels a bit odd to me moving on; although for my own good, the flow feels disrupted. Don’t get me wrong, I want nothing more to become an associate VP of something in two years or so, it’s just odd. I’ve had opportunities to leave before, none of those materialized. I do know that I see some the closest ones everyday, and that I’m not gone completely; but one day we will all go different ways (staying connected hopefully) and think back on the relationships of the past knowing that they helped shape who we are today.

So as I turn the page (slightly with the previous page still rabbit eared) take time to remember the past and whether or not you want it to influence your present and future. Enough reflection for this week! Don’t be bullies and respect other’s orientation. Sounds good.
